from principal Antonio Esquibel at Abraham Lincoln High School:

On Friday January 21st we have two events occurring that will be part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration Activities.  We will have an all school assembly that will recognize the 1810 Mexican Independence and 1910 Mexican Revolution events.  We will be hosting a professional Mexican Folkloric dance group that will perform.

In addition, later that night our girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will play North HS beginning at 5:30pm.  This night is designated as an Alumni Night.  We are expecting over 100 ex Lincoln students to be in attendance.  They will receive free pizza and t-shirt prior to the boys’ game that begins at 7pm.  During the half time of the 7pm boys’ game, we will be recognizing our First Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Award Winners:

* Coach Les Mattocks- Head Wrestling and Girls’ Golf; Assistant Football; Cheer Coach
* Keith Abeyta, Class ’87- All American-All State-All City Basketball; All City Track/Field and All State Cross Country
* Jennifer Ohlson, Class ’89- All American-All State-All City Soccer; All State-All City Swimming, Track/Field

Coach Mattocks is also a National and State Coaching Hall of Fame Winner and a graduate from the Lincoln graduating class of 1961.  Keith Abeyta during the mid to late 80’s was a local sports hero at Lincoln.  He was known throughout the state as one of the best high school basketball players during his era, he led the state in scoring his junior year and also played in an All American basketball game.  Many still consider him the best high school basketball player over four years to play at Lincoln.  Jenny Ohlson is hands down the best female athlete Lincoln has ever seen.  She holds many school records.  She was selected as an All American in soccer and won various accolades in each sport she played.  Many view her as the top athlete, male or female in the history of Lincoln HS.

Please join us in recognizing these amazing award winners on January 21st at Lincoln during the half time of the 7pm basketball game vs North HS.

I told my colleague, Arturo Jimenez (a North HS grad), to prepare for a shellacking.  Which one of you Lancers want to come with me to deliver it?

All in good fun, of course…
