Mathematics and Science Leadership Academy to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday on Thursday, March 10, 2011.
The Mathematics and Science Leadership Academy (MSLA) will celebrate “Read Across America” in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 10, 2011.
Parents and community members are invited to participate in our opening festivities beginning at 8:30 a.m. on March 10th. Christy Levings from the National Education Association Executive Committee and Vice Chair of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards will kick off the day’s festivities. Students will be engaged in literacy and science activities related to the author’s classics throughout the morning including a book giveaway, a visit from the Cat in the Hat, dressing as their favorite Dr. Suess character etc.
MSLA will also host a family literacy night from 5:00-6:00 p.m. with various family literacy games that were created by parents and staff.
MSLA is a DPS “Performance School,” proposed by the Denver Classroom Teachers Association. It is a teacher-led school where everyone is a learner, teacher, and leader. It was approved by the Board of Education last fall, and is implementing cutting edge reforms including 21st century skills and technology, as well as peer review.
NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading in honor of the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. NEA has been celebrating this event since 1998.
MSLA is located in the Rishel Building at 451 S. Tejon St. It shares the facility with Rishel Middle School and KIPP Denver Collegiate High School.
