As you recall, I introduced a resolution to the board last month to direct the district to begin the process of making a recommendation to change the school year start date to after Labor Day, as a way to relieve the heat in the buildings in August.

I’m happy to report that the Superintendent has read all your petitions and has heeded the resolution and is launching a “Start Date Task Force” to begin talking about these issues.  The task force will be making a final recommendation to the board in mid-December.

Though the district has pulled together a list of 20 people, I do recommend that if you are interested in this issue, you should attend the meetings anyway.  The first one is today. They are as follow:

  • Thursday, Oct. 27, 5:30-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 2, 5:30-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 30, 5:30-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 7, 5:30-7 p.m.

Apparently there will also be a survey launching week after next, and I will post the link here once it’s available.

This is good news.  Please do make time to get involved, whether you’re part of the 20 or not.

More on the developments are found here.
